Day One kicks off with the impressive Dunguib likely to go off a hot favourite for the Supreme Novices Hurdle. Philip Fenton’s superstar has trounced all before him over hurdles and after last year’s bumper victory at the festival is almost certain to be most punters banker.
Currently trading at the best price of 5/6 with Coral the seven-year-old looks a certainty.
The Irish Independent Arkle is the second race on the card and this year’s renewal is a very open betting heat. Captain Cee Bee (18/5 Sporting Bet) heads the ante-post market after an impressive transition to the larger obstacles.
However, the Irish raider has already been on the floor once this year and his jumping will be truly tested round Prestbury Park.

The big race of the day is the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle which sees the top two-mile hurdlers go to post and this year’s contest is a wide open affair.
Solwhit and Zaynar head the market (5/1 various firms) and have been both impressive this year. Zaynar has stepped up from novice company and has won easily on his outings this season and Solwhit was last seen winning the Irish Champion Hurdle.
Last season’s third Binocular (8/1 Sporting Bet) has been disappointing this season and you can’t have any confidence backing it at single-figured prices but with AP McCoy onboard anything is possible.
Khyber Kim (11/1 Sporting Bet) has been a revelation this season bagging two impressive wins at Cheltenham and could mark a bit of value and is a solid each way shout.
One interesting outsider at long odds is the 2008 winner Katchit (100/1 various firms). Alan King’s little pocket rocket is a real fighter and up the energy-sapping Cheltenham hill could quite possibly just sneak into the places.

With such an open field the tentative selection would probably be Zaynar who has impressed this season and will keep up his unbeaten run over timber.
The Cross Country Handicap Chase is always an interesting spectacle and it is one that Irish trainer Enda Bolger has monopolised in recent years with the likes of Spot Thedifference and Garde Champetre dominating the unique contest.
With the 3m 7f race consisting of hurdles, fences and a plethora of weird and wonderful jumps, you need a horse that takes to the task and you surely can’t look away from Garde Champetre (5/2 Paddy Power) making it a hat-trick for JP McManus and Nina Carberry.
The final race on the card is the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle where last year’s winner Quevega (11/8 Skybet) will be hard to beat but I like the look of Whiteoak (12/1 Paddy Power) who will mark some good each way value. |
