The Ryanair Chase is an intriguing contest with Poquelin (4/1 various firms) heading the market for Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh. The seven-year-old has a brilliant record at Cheltenham this year with two wins in the Zeturf.com Handicap Chase and Boylesports.com Gold Cup Chase and a second behind Tranquil Sea in the Paddy Power Gold Cup and will be hard to beat again.
Tranquil Sea (7/1 Bet365) hasn't really gone on from his Paddy Power success and finished behind Golden Silver next time out at short odds and could be a bit short in the market. I like the look of Barbers Shop (6/1 various firms) who has been taking on a lot better fields this season and finished fourth in the Hennessy behind Denman and third behind Kauto Star in the King George VI Chase at Kempton.
The Queen's horse will find this a lot easier and marks excellent each way value and I think is almost a certainty to finish in the first three. Other contenders at much larger odds who could make the frame are Gwanako (66/1 Victor Chandler) and Albertas Run (33/1 Ladbrokes).
Away from the two main races there are usually some shocks in the other four contests especially in the Freddie Williams Festival Plate which has winners ranging from 12/1 to 66/1 in recent years. Some interesting handicaps round off the card with the Jewson Novices' Handicap Chase and Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle starting the meeting with the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Steeple Chase rounding off proceedings at 16:40 for the amateur jockeys.
