Cheltenham Day Three Tips

Big Buck’s will be the main attraction on day three when he sets out to retain his World Hurdle crown at 15:20. Paul Nicholls’ seven-year-old has dominated the long distance hurdle scene after resorting to the smaller obstacles and at 4/6 with Sporting Bet will go off a very short favourite.

The Stewart family-owned gelding won this race by 1 ¾ lengths last year and has demolished all his rivals this year and looks almost the festival certainty, so it is a matter of trying to dig out an each way selection for a bit of value. Karabak sits second in the market (6/1 various firms) but hasn't won for over a year and was 3 ½ lengths behind Big Buck's in the Long Walk Hurdle last time out and could be one to avoid.

Tidal Bay (9/1 Ladbrokes, William Hill) is an interesting contender who has moved back to hurdles very much like Big Buck's after failing to impressive over fences.

Howard Johnson's nine-year-old was an impressive winner of the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham in January and will definitely start off shorter on the day and could be a bit of each way value.

An outsider who could run well at big odds is Fair Along (50/1 various firms). Philip Hobbs' eight-year-old finished ninth in this race last year but has progressed over the larger trip and could always sneak into the places at large odds.

The Ryanair Chase is an intriguing contest with Poquelin (4/1 various firms) heading the market for Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh. The seven-year-old has a brilliant record at Cheltenham this year with two wins in the Zeturf.com Handicap Chase and Boylesports.com Gold Cup Chase and a second behind Tranquil Sea in the Paddy Power Gold Cup and will be hard to beat again.

Tranquil Sea (7/1 Bet365) hasn't really gone on from his Paddy Power success and finished behind Golden Silver next time out at short odds and could be a bit short in the market. I like the look of Barbers Shop (6/1 various firms) who has been taking on a lot better fields this season and finished fourth in the Hennessy behind Denman and third behind Kauto Star in the King George VI Chase at Kempton.

The Queen's horse will find this a lot easier and marks excellent each way value and I think is almost a certainty to finish in the first three. Other contenders at much larger odds who could make the frame are Gwanako (66/1 Victor Chandler) and Albertas Run (33/1 Ladbrokes).

Away from the two main races there are usually some shocks in the other four contests especially in the Freddie Williams Festival Plate which has winners ranging from 12/1 to 66/1 in recent years. Some interesting handicaps round off the card with the Jewson Novices' Handicap Chase and Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle starting the meeting with the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Steeple Chase rounding off proceedings at 16:40 for the amateur jockeys.
