The meeting starts off with a wide open JCB Triumph Hurdle with the youngsters looking to stamp their mark on the national hunt game. Mille Chief (6/1 Sporting Bet) heads the field for Alan King and the four-year-old has improved race by race after being brought down on his very first run. His short-priced success at Huntingdon in January was a stroll and there is surely more to come from this gelding.
Carlito Brigante (7/1 various firms) has contracted in price dramatically following a 20/1 success on Boxing Day at Leopardstown and following a comfortable win in the Scottish Triumph Hurdle must surely be thereabouts on the day. Advisor (16/1 William Hill) hasn't put a foot wrong this season for Paul Nicholls and could mark a bit of each way value in what is a very hot race.
The Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle at 14:20 is an intriguing race which sees up-and-coming hurdlers go to post. Tell Massini (11/2 Totesport) has excelled at Cheltenham this year with two wins out of two and is currently unbeaten over timber and could quite possibly make it a hat-trick of successes at Prestbury Park.
His main contenders are Restless Harry (7/1 Boylseports) who won easily at Cheltenham in January and will definitely come on for the run and Quel Esprit (7/1 William Hill) who has been plying his trade in Ireland. Willie Mullins' charge had a shock defeat at short odds last time out at Leopardstown, so he will want to make amends for that loss.
Other races on the day include the County Hurdle which will see a huge field go to post and the Foxhunters Steeple Chase which is the equivalent of the Gold Cup for the amateur riders.
The curtain is then drawn on proceedings with the Conditional Jockeys Hurdle and the Grand Annual Chase but all eyes will surely be on the Paul Nicholls' pair of Kauto Star and Denman when they meet for the third time in the Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup. |
